Making new clothing items creates an incredible amount of waste and continues to make waste through its entire life. Even when the clothing item is done being used, it sits in a landfill, being waste. The closed-loop system has helped lower this waste. The system uses old pieces of clothing and recycles the to make a new piece of clothing. The process turns the clothing into a pulp, which is then made into fibers, and therefore yarn to make a new fabric. This process is also used for glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, and some plastics. This saves money for the company doing the process and also saves a lot of clothing waste.
Patagonia exercises a closed-loop system by making their polyester for their clothes out of plastic soda bottles. Not all closed-loop systems use the same product to make something new. Not a lot of big-name brand companies accept their previously sold clothing and renew them which is why it is important to continue to not buy from them. You can practice the closed-loop system by reusing what you already have. This can be by up cycling your old clothes/fabrics and making something new out of it such as bags, reusable towels, bath mats, etc.
