Why Buy Second-Hand

There are so many benefits of buying second-hand such as clothes being cheaper, less pollution, saving water, and having unique pieces.

Clothes at thrift stores are much cheaper and affordable! Since the clothes are worn, they are so much cheaper, though having them worn is not a bad thing. Fabric lasts for an incredibly long time and thrift stores do not sell incredibly worn pieces. From my experience, all the clothes I have seen and bought from various thrift stores were in great condition and problems don't arise after a handful of wears and washes, just like brand new ones. I have even found new clothing with tags at thrift stores! By these clothes being second-hand, you are giving them a second life. Without having the opportunity to purchase second-hand, these clothes would be sitting in landfills or being burned. These landfills pollute our air and waters. Clothes made of cotton can take around 5 months to decompose while clothes made of polyester can take up to 200 years. With 11 million tons of clothing estimated to go to landfills yearly, our Earth cannot and will not prosper. One last reason to buy second-hand is to not support the production of new clothes. To make a brand new pair of jeans it can take a minimum of 1,800 gallons of water. This much water is used to simply grow the cotton and put together the jeans. This does not include the continuous washing and dying of them to make them less stiff and better looking. By buying second-hand you are saving money, water, and our Earth. I have found some of my favorite clothing pieces second-hand at garage sales, thrift stores, estate sales, and from my parent's closets. Shopping second-hand makes your wardrobe very unique and special.
