Not so Silent Spring
11.5 x 8.5 x 6 in
March 2023
Book, Glue, Wood
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson is an incredibly impactful and influential book about pesticides in our waterways. Reading this book enlightened me greatly and led me to make this piece. I carved an upturned face to represent enlightenment. I made sure that the words on the pages aligned with the eyes of the face. I struggled panning out all of the carved pages evenly, thought I was successful by putting pieces of cardstock in between each page. I also glued wood to the spine of the book to allow it to lay still.
On a Line

Fabric, String, Wire
With my love for beetles, I decided to make three beetles walking on a line for my Unconventional Jewelry project. I used my scrap fabric from my previous clothing projects and carefully sewed the three body parts together. It was a challenge since I wanted the stitching lines to be seen and it can be difficult to make the stitching all proportional. I have been sewing for a couple of years so this project was not that difficult rather I really enjoyed the process. Sewing is very relaxing and I really like how this piece came out.
Disaster Dice
5 x 5 x 5 in
May 2023
Wood, Wood burner
This piece is inspired by the wooden blocks that kids often play with. These dice display the effects of climate change. Each side is different and shows an issue such as flooding, drought, and fires. To emphasize the urgent nature of these crises, every physical disaster of climate change on one die results in any one of the broader effects of the climate emergency. To make these dice, Sam and I cut wooden cubes, sanded the sharp edges with a belt sander, cleaned up the blocks with sandpaper, and burnt the wood using a wood burner with various tips.
Pinned Organic Beetle
5 x 3.5 x 1.5 in
January 2023
Soap, Cork, Wood, Pins
I had made a beetle because they are very captivating and beautiful. To allow the beetle to look organic, I gently carved the legs to be rounded and smooth. Carving in between the head and arms was a very difficult challenge, though I succeeded by using multiple tools and being very gentle. I had the idea of putting the beetle in a wooden box and pinning it to replicate beetle pinning while also being able to display the texture and detail of the beetle.
Peace Doves
24 x 25 in
October 2022
Paper, Wire, Fishing Line
Peace, equality, and happiness are very important to me and guide how I view life. Therefore for this art piece, I was inspired to make 50 origami doves and glue them to form a peace sign. When discussing with my table mates, they suggested that I make the piece hanging so that you could see the peace sign when looking directly under it. I loved this idea, though with just hot glue holding the doves together, I knew I needed more structure. I then glued wire to the back of the piece and from there tied fishing line from the wire to the top hoop, allowing the piece to hang. I love how this piece came out and I am very excited to take it home and display it in my room.
Bright, Elegant Lady with Fan
6 x 6 x 6 in
June 2023
Pastel, paper
I was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s Lady with Fan. This piece took a lot of time and effort because of how detailed and intricate the carving was. I split up the imagine into four panels: lady with fan, birds, flowers, and the yellow background. To draw the entire piece, I used pastels which was difficult because it is hard to be detail and intricate with them. Overall, I really like how this piece came out because of the pastel and exacto-knife skills it gave me and the vibrant colors.
Rough yet Graceful
19 x 15 cm
October 2020
Styrofoam
I was inspired to make a tree with a butterfly on it from all of the trees in my neighborhood. The base of the tree is just the bottom of the styrofoam cup, the trunk was made by cutting the cup in long triangles and same with the branches, but I did not make them each the same size; then with my scraps, I made tiny triangles to make little branches; as if the branches are growing off of each other; and finally, I added a little butterfly on top with graceful wings. I think my main success was making sure every piece of the cup had a place and was adding to the piece, rather than it just being there. My biggest challenge was using the hot glue gun and trying to not have big globs of glue everywhere because I don’t have a lot of experience with the device. I could have improved my piece by adding more texture to the branches and making the tree look more full.

Cardboard, Plastic, Oil paint markers
To make this piece I took a picture of my hand and posed how I wanted it to be, and drew each finger with a different color and on a different layer. There are seven layers in total. I was struggling to make this piece for many reasons. One, I was having artist block and it took me days to figure out what I wanted to do. Another reason is that once I drew the fingers and wrist, I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to make my structure. In the end, I like how the hand is drawn and the colors of it, but I think the structure and the way the piece is put together is quite sloppy; so I definitely think that I could do better.
